Your Children will Amaze you if chance!

With me working two jobs. 1 one nights and the other filling my days off. My kids have definitely stepped up to the plate and shown me what they can do. They’ve never complained. I think they enjoy showing me what they can do and seeing for them selves what they are capable of!

My kids can cook dinner! At 13 and 11 years old. They can cook! who would have thought? And they WANT to cook. My 11 year old can make simple meals that are 3 to 4 ingredients, or if it’s a frozen dinner. She has figured out all that reading she’s done in school is coming in handy! My 13 year old will make breakfast for dinner. Scrambled eggs and Croissants filled with cheese. (Which my husband doesn’t eat the croissants when I make them with cheese. But he will he them when my son makes them) My 11 year old can bake, all by herself. Start to finish, 100% by her self. She knows how to tell when a cake is done baking. It’s amazing. I think My husband was pretty impressed to when he was home over Christmas and sure enough the kids wanted to show off their skills. (Hey I was working nights so I was sleeping, Someone had to feed him lol)

My kids kids now help me meal plan. I don’t know if they realize it or not but I’ll leave a note pad of paper on the table with the Word Dinner and the numbers 1-7 below it and they will write in meals they would like. The pick a few each week that they will make and the rest I will make…. or buy (cause really I’m really really tired some days)

The are more then willing to help out around the house. Working nights is weird.  when I have breaks, I don’t know what to do with myself. Do I clean? do I Bake? I wont go walking in the dark.. If I can’t see what’s around me, I’m not gonna lie it kind of freaks me out… I blame one too many horror movies on that!  But If there’s things I’m too tired to do(Because honestly switching back and forth from nights to days and back again is exhausting!) They always have everything I ask done before I wake up from sleeping or before I get home from the day job.

We talk a lot about money! Did you know your child only has to be 12 to sign off on their own investments? Well now you know! My kids have money invested! At first I’m sure it was something I forced them to do.  But they get mail from the bank that tells them How much their investment has made and that they are reinvesting it. My kids have the goal of getting another investment going before this year is done. Which makes me pretty proud. I’m not going to lie! My kids are going to be better off in their early years when they move out then most people I know!

Now I just want to find ways to keep encouraging them to grow. To give them the self confidence they are going to need in this cruel world where everyone is going to judge their every move.  I like the encourage them to think of a job they want to do as an adult that isn’t the normal 9-5.  Where they aren’t stuck in a cubicle their whole life staring at 4 walls. I want them to know they can do anything in this world they set their mind to. You want to be a singer? Great! Come up with a plan and make it happen! But I also let my daughter know. Singers aren’t just singers, now a days they are clothes designers, they act in commercials. They don’t just do one thing.

The most important thing I ask my kids every so often probably to the point it drives them crazy.  I ask “Who’s the only opinion that matters?” The used to look at me and say yours. But I told them “No, The ONLY opinion that matters is your own. It doesn’t matter what your friends think, your Grandparents think, or even what your dad or I think.  As long as you can look yourself in the mirror and you are happy with the choices you make, THAT is the only thing that matters!”

My newest favourite saying which I will get and put up somewhere in the house, comes from a movie I recently fell in love with! Surprise, Surprise it’s a Hallmark movie. The Birthday Wish. The mom gives a great piece of advice “Do what makes you happy today and tomorrow will take care of itself” I don’t think I’ve heard of a better way to love life than that simple quote.

Wait… What day is it?

No really… What day is it? and How many day until Christmas???

I’ve been so busy working. I got the bright Idea to get a job outside of the house part time, because working from home is great… until you realize it gives you just the kids to talk to… and well if your kids are like my kids, they tend to have their own friends and only talk to me when they need something or if I’m the butt of one of their jokes. So it was Hi Ho off to work I go. 8 days a month(roughly) to do collections for a Dentist office. I love it! The girls there are amazing! One of my girlfriends from high school works across the street from the mall I work in and we meet for lunch almost every day I work. And when she’s not there I (“window”) Shop through the mall. Okay so maybe working in the mall may not be such a good idea. I promise I’m trying to keep my spending down. But it’s going to have it’s perks because I am sooooooooooooooo far behind in my Christmas shopping I’m debating about telling the kids this years Christmas is cancelled and just start planning for next years. I’m not sure what happened. Normally I’m almost done my Christmas shopping. This year I don’t have much done at all.

Life is busy. I work Thursday- Wednesday night for my night shift. Then work Friday, Monday-Wednesday for the Dentist office. Yay for my weekend off coming up. where I will refuse to leave my house! I thought I’d feel more tired working so much but so far I’m enjoying it a lot.  Both jobs are different enough. And I love doing collections so it doesn’t really feel like a job! Working so much also gives me less time to miss Tristan. I don’t have time to focus on it.

Plus, as if there wasn’t enough going on Both kids decided to catch Chicken Pox… I know I know… there’s a vaccine for that. But I believe Chicken Pox is a childhood disease that most kids caught and everyone I know survived getting it. Also My kids were the first generation that the vaccine came out for… and there was no way I was going to let them be the trial generation just to find out there were side effects down the road.  So all and all I’m happy they got it now I don’t have to worry about it.

Other big news. We decided in about two years we are going to move back to Alberta. With the jobs not working out in Ontario and Tristan having to go back to Alberta to work. We don’t really like being far apart. So we are taking two years so Shianne can finish Grade 8 with her favourite teacher, which was my favourite teacher growing up (how can I let her miss out on that) Also we are going to get as many renovations done on our current house to up the value so we can have a nice down payment for a house in Alberta. We haven’t told family yet. But I would be surprised if they don’t see it coming. At the end of the day Tristan and I would rather be together then far apart.

I think that’s it for my update. I’m off to double check what day it is for the gazillith time.. it’s umm Tuesday? right? or it’s my Thursday almost my Friday for one job lol.. and thus I need to confirm my days.

Back to Plan A

What a crazy few months it has been. First Tristan moved back, he switched jobs 3 times before we even left for our Europe vacation, and now… well we are right back where we started.

It’s been a year full of ups and downs. We thought for sure if tristan came home we could handle the pay cut… On paper we could. based on the “promises” companies said their guys make it should have worked out. The first job liked to pick and choose what he got paid for. example he would get paid for ‘finished’ runs. for if load A got delivered and even if load B got delivered there was no guarantee he’d get paid for both if they happened in the same pay period. We felt like they were trying to control how much their drivers made. Also they told Tristan they hired him for their heavy haul but wouldn’t let him show them what he could do. They ended up telling him they had to prove himself. Which is no problem if they’d give him loads he could prove himself onSo Tristan switched companies.

The next company was better… It was Union… We had never worked for a Union before… What we learned is Union workers are a bunch of whining babies. But besides the whining done by ‘seniority’  union guys (which was anyone hired before Tristan). It wasn’t a bad job. Tristan enjoyed it a lot. They used his expertise, let him haul over sized. it was perfect, except… it was 2 1/2 hours away.  It was a very long drive. It was costing too much in gas to go back and forth. $110 every other day was insane to pay for fuel. So we sold Tristan’s pickup truck (I think I may have seen tears as it pulled away) and bought a Mazda3… I know I know every guys dream car (poor guy).

We started looking for a job closer to home. Tristan had been eyeing one company for a few years now. Every time we’d come back to Ontario on holidays we had to do a ‘drive by’. This company wanted him so bad they had him do his orientation before we left for Europe.  Then we came back and he did 1 load…. just one… They did have him working in the yard and other stuff when they couldn’t find him loads. We found out after we gave our notice that somehow someone had messed up and marked his truck out of service which is why he wasn’t receiving any loads… But he was told if things pick up they will call him and he’s welcome back any time. Actually he’s welcome back at two out of those 3 jobs any time.

Which brings us almost back to date. We realized he wasn’t getting the hours at job #3. How long to we hold on to a sinking ship? and who knows how long it would have taken them to realize he was marked out of service by mistake? Well I don’t like to wonder what if’s! Tristan and I operate on one life motto and it’s one everyone has heard, but it definitely guides us in everything we do. Our motto “Everything happens for a reason”. It’s our belief for everything.

So once we realized job #3 wasn’t working out, well we decided our plan for Tristan moving home isn’t working right now.  We aren’t getting a head and we are actually sinking.. We weren’t sinking fast but it was a steady decline.  So Tristan and I wrote an email before he left for work to his old job in Alberta see if they had any open trucks and if they’d take him back.  Within half an hour of their head office opening they were calling him to rehire him. So now he’s back in Alberta and we are back to our plan A.

It’s not like we didn’t try it here,  and we loved having him home. But a Trucker isn’t supposed to be home all the time, they don’t make any money being home.  I’d like to think our Plan A is going to be stronger this time, I think we learned a lot in the last few months!

  • I bake more, who knew I was such a great baker? and I bake from scratch, I didn’t see that one ever happening.
  • We shop at the butchers for our meat. They don’t charge tax! Who knew?
  • We sold his truck which saves us $500/month in payments (our insurance also went down after selling it)
  • We got rid of cable saving up $102/mont
  • Alright but I upped my internet speed and got an android box. But my work is covering 25% of my internet bill because I work nights from home (which is also saving me gas money, If I’d stop running over nails it would save me wear and tear on the car too)

I think we had to go through these last few months trying to find ways to save money in hopes that he could stay here in Ontario with us. I think it’s set us up to be more successful this time around. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to ever revisit a plan you had thought you were done with, sometimes the first plan was a good plan… it just needed a little tweaking!

Life is changing once again

Holidays are over.. the Czech Republic was AMAZING!! Now it’s back to the real world. Though I will go back and write some posts about our travels.

Tristan started actually working for his new job this past week. He did his orientation before we went on holidays. The kids went back to school. As for me, today was my final day working days in the office. Now I have a glorious 5 days off before I start my 7 nights on 7 nights off night shift rotation!

I’m excited for the change and hoping I’m up to the challenge of working 8pm-8am. I’ve done it in the past before but only for 3 days at a time. Now I just have to find something to fill those 7 days off. Maybe I’ll take some online courses, or maybe focus more on my diaper cakes. The world is my oyster!  With another Niece on the way I’m sure I’ll be spending a lot of time helping my sister in law with her two kids!  I’m excited for the upcoming year!  I hope I don’t waste it!

Embarrassing your Child

As my kids get older, the more I enjoy trying to embarrass them in some shape or form.  I love when people look over and laugh or smile, because me and my kids are doing something stupid together, It brings a little happiness to their day!

My kids are both very sarcastic kids, God help their future spouses because they’d better be quick witted and be able to keep up. I hope they end up with people who wont try to change them.

My motto is life is too short not to spend it laughing.  You’d think my kids would be used to how I act by now. But sometimes they forget. So I like to remind them from time to time.

Just yesterday Adrian, he’s 13 he’s trying very hard these days to act like an adult… (cause you know 13 in an adult now a days).. He was giving a bit of attitude in the store. I could have punished him but instead while  we were standing in line waiting to check out I decided to Twirl like a ballerina hands above my head, In my mind I held the perfect ballerina pose spinning on my tipsy toes. Adrian didn’t find it so funny he walked away… But Shianne joined me.  (She is going to be a hard one to embarrass) The cashiers though it was hilarious. I continued my dancing  into the parking lot. But by then it didn’t embarrass Adrian anymore because “we were out of the store”

Today I got some funny looks in Walmart… WALMART… really walmart? It’s like no one in there has spent hours looking at the “People of Walmart” webpage.. you haven’t? you’re lying! Go check it out! see what you are missing. I wasn’t even doing anything special. just a little dancing while walking. I made one mom really laugh when I was walking down the isle and caught her toddlers attention and made the toddler laugh and the mom looked over. I just said “Sorry I’m just being creepy playing with your toddler” Shianne said something about not being small like that anymore and I said “or cute like that any more”  something along those lines… (you probably had to be there to find it funny).  But the mom had to turn her back cause she was laughing so hard.  But we dance down multiple isles, I even sung the kids a little bit of “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard” (I was drinking a milkshake… it worked…) My kids hadn’t heard of the song… So Of course I had to download it before we got to the car cause I need to force my kids to listen to quality music like that!

I need to find more ways then just singing and dancing to embarrass the kids but for now it’s what works!

Life has been busy

Running on fumes… Or at least that is how it feels these days.

lets see what’s going on.

  • Between work and the Kids soccer my Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday leave me with little time for anything else those days.
  • Work- They have definitely stepped up my training. I’m taking that as a good sigh. Clearly they like me or they wouldn’t be pushing me to learn more. Also with us being short staffed right now there’s lots of over time. I’m loving having the option to do overtime at home, with the kids being bigger they definitely don’t need me watching their every move any more. Tonight alone I put in an extra 3 1/2 hours.
  • We sold Tristan’s truck (He may have cried a little) He loved his truck, but right now he’s driving 2-3 hours to work depending on traffic it just wasn’t practical to keep it, he had to fill it every other time he drove to work.
  • Car shopping… Well when you sell one vehicle you have to buy another. So we are looking for a car for him something good on gas, but we want no payments. Who knew used cars were so expensive these days? We gave ourselves a $5000 budget thinking we could find something decent… ya.. no… So we are constantly looking on kijiji, creepily stopping at peoples housed with cars for sale in their driveways and stopping at every single used car dealer ship we find. I’m sure we will find something but the hunt is taking up a lot of time.
  • Tristan has switched jobs once already. He has some interviews line up. He may be switching again. He loves what he does and where he works now. but it’s the 2-3 hour drive to and from work that kind of kills it. The kids are dead set against a move. So that’s off the table. We are hoping for a company that is out of the same area I currently work. Fingers crossed. Our motto is “Everything happens for a reason” so if it’s meant to work out it will.
  • The kids are on Summer break, Both passed school. Shianne with flying colours. I don’t ever worry about her marks. Adrian passed… His marks are what we expect. He needs a teachers assistants help. He has one in Alberta but with the teacher strike in Ontario it’s been a struggle to get something set up for him here. But he passed and at the end of the day as long as he tried his best, I’m happy!
  • Europe – The count down to August 15th is on.  It’s coming up fast.
  • Family get togethers. We had 2 family get togethers over the weekend. One at my house. I made 7 batches of French roll buns for hamburgers. The family loved it!  The second one at my Mother In-laws the next day with the same people for her birthday. Not sure why we didn’t combine them to one day, but C’est la vie!
  • Sleep? what that? I don’t remember the last time I got a good nights sleep! When Tristan is home the alarm goes off at 4:30 or 5am so he can get to work on time. By the time he leaves the house I’m awake. Thank god for BookBub and their endless supply of free books every day!  I started reading when I can’t sleep. It’s a blessing and a curse. Because I like to read a full book in one day. I’m not very good at putting books down. Which almost made me late leaving the house one morning when I thought I hit snooze only to realize I turned off the alarm… Oops. I made it to work on time that day! Good thing I can get ready for work quickly when I have to!

So that’s my life in a nut shell. There’s a lot going on. I try to have grocery shopping and errands done Friday night, So I can spend the weekends at home relaxing. Once the car shopping is done, I’ll get my relaxing weekends back!  Until then I’ll just take things one day at a time!

Have you heard of BookBub? OMG I’m in love!  I love reading. It’s my escape when life gets crazy and I need to unwind and de-stress!

I signed up a few weeks ago and every single day I get an email with book deals. most of the free or under $2. I’ve read a few books already and they pick very good books. Of course most of them are part of a series so you will want to actually buy the other books. But I needed to find some new authors I liked anyways! I’m almost out of Sabrina Jeffries books to read! I pretty much own every book the woman has wrote and she’s taking her sweet time with the next one! lol Doesn’t she know I’m impatiently waiting?

But If you are a bookworm like me I highly recommend signing up! there’s at least 3 free books a day to upload to your kindle reader. I downloaded the app for my iPad. I figure with our trip to Europe coming I’m going to need something to read on the long plane ride there!

However will my kids make it in the real world?

Raising kids is fun, honestly if you don’t have any just go grab some random ones and watch how interesting your life gets! It only gets better as they get older… or so I’m finding out.

My poor son, at the tender age of 13. His phrase of late is how he is ‘stressed out’. Wow will the real world ever knock him on his butt one day!  But he’s convinced this is the end all be all stress, and Tristan and I try not to laugh though some days it’s very hard.

There was the time he was stressed over girls. Yes i said GIRLS! He’s 13. I wanted to warn him this is just the tip of the ice berg with us women. But this particular day he was stressed because he had broken up with one girl. And then that girl liked another boy, but when that boy didn’t want to date her she wanted to date Adrian again. But he was talking to another girl. And the first girl started telling everyone him and the other girl were dating and that why he wouldn’t go out with her again…. I don’t remember this much drama in grade 7! Maybe because I’m a girl? Do boys have it harder then girls with drama in school? I’m sure I’ll find out in a few years when Shianne is 13 and her ‘stressed out’ phase starts. stay tuned for the results.

But poor Adrian. He had me almost in tears and almost dying of laughter this past weekend. I had asked his help in spraying off the pool cover… The bird have made it their missing to paint it with their crap. So I wanted to give them a clean canvas. So I told him just to spray it off. Nothing major, he didn’t have to Cinderella it and get on hands and knees and scrub it.  Just lay it out and spray it with the hose.

I had gone inside to talk to Tristan on the phone and a while later Adrian came in. And he had this look on his face… as a mother my “Mom intuition” started tingling and I knew something was wrong.  So I asked..

  • Me: What’s wrong?
  • Adrian: I’m stressed out!
  • Me: Why are you stressed out?

Well the tears start and in a rush,

  • Adrian: I can’t get the weed wacker to work and I’m trying to clean of the pool cover but the wind keeps blowing it over.
  • Me: Why don’t you use bricks to hold it down? (I was trying very hard not to laugh. It didn’t help Tristan was laughing in my ear on the phone…)
  • Adrian: I tried that, it’s not working! I’m so stressed out.

Poor child of mine. After I let him shed a few tears. I let him off the hook. I told him to go jump in the pool and de-stress!

I kind of worry though. If this is what he thinks stress is… what’s going to happen when he gets out into the real world?

French Bread Rolls

I had a potluck at work a few weeks ago. I thought hey, I’ll bake up some home made buns for it my co-workers will love it!  I tried this recipe out for the first time on them lol. I probably should have tried it on my family first, but I like to like on the wild side.  The buns turned out A-mazing!! My only problem is we have multiple potlucks at work. And everyone only wants me to make the buns.  At least these are super easy to make! only 6 Ingredients!

What I do that’s not in the instructions (I do it for most of my bread recipes if it’s not already warm in the house from me baking) I turn on the stove to 200 degrees and as soon as it’s warmed up I turn it off. By the time I have the dough for the bread is ready to sit and rise, the oven is the perfect temp for the bowl to sit in the oven and the bread dough rises quicker. (For a busy mom like me, the quicker I can get my baking done, the better!)

  1. 1 1/2 cups warm water
  2. 3/4 Tablespoon instant yeast (or 1 tablespoon active dry yeast)
  3. 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  4. 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  5. 1 teaspoon salt
  6. 4 cups all-purpose flour
  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large bowl by hand, combine the warm water, yeast, sugar, oil, salt and 2 cups of the flour (if you are using active dry yeast instead of instant yeast, let the yeast proof in the warm water and sugar for about 3-5 minutes until it is foamy and bubbly before adding the oil, salt and flour). Begin mixing and continue to add the rest of the flour gradually until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. (You may not need to use all of the flour the recipe calls for) The dough should be soft and smooth but still slightly tacky to the touch.
  2. Knead dough in the stand mixer or by hand until it is very smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes in a stand mixer or 8-10 minutes by hand. Lightly spray a large bowl with cooking spray and place the dough in the bowl. Cover the bowl with lightly greased plastic wrap. Let the dough rise until it has doubled (about 45 minutes to an hour).
  3. Punch down dough and turn it out onto a lightly greased countertop. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and form the dough into round balls. Place the rolls on a lightly greased or silpat-lined baking sheet about an inch or two apart. Cover rolls with a kitchen towel or lightly greased plastic wrap. Let rolls rise until doubled.
  4. Preheat oven to 400° F. Bake for 12-14 minutes until lightly browned and cooked through. Remove from oven and immediately rub the tops of rolls with butter.
  1. Yields: 1 dozen
  2. **These rolls can be made into the most amazing sub rolls for sandwiches! Just combine two roll dough pieces together and shape into a log. Then bake according to directions above. Yields 6 sub rolls.

Of course I found this recipe on Pinterest (really where else do people get recipes these days?) Thanks to this recipe is a family favourite.
